Cagliari Car Hire: What Do Excess, Deposit and Desk Extras Mean?

Updated October 18, 2026 · 5 min read

A car key and payment card resting on a rental agreement beside a small silver hatchback

The answer first. Do not choose a Cagliari rental car from the daily rate alone. Open the rental conditions and compare five separate items: the excess, the security deposit, what the CDW excludes, the fuel policy and the card required at collection. They are related, but they are not the same charge. A cheaper car can be the dearer booking if its conditions do not fit the card or protection you have.

Excess is not the deposit

The excess is the amount for which the renter may remain responsible under the rental agreement when covered damage occurs. The deposit is the sum the supplier blocks or charges as security at collection. One is a liability limit in the contract; the other affects the money or credit available on your card. Never copy one number into the other box in your mental budget.

Both amounts vary by vehicle, supplier, protection package and dates. The binding figures are in the conditions attached to the specific offer. Save those conditions with the voucher and check them again before travelling. If the wording is unclear, ask the supplier in writing rather than relying on a generic summary.

What CDW does and does not tell you

CDW means collision damage waiver. Its presence does not by itself mean that every scratch, tyre, window, underbody part, key or theft event is covered, nor that the excess is zero. Read the exclusions and the procedure for reporting damage. Extra protection sold by a broker can also work differently from a waiver sold at the rental desk: it may reimburse eligible costs after the supplier has charged you.

That distinction matters on Sardinia, where a beach itinerary can involve tight parking spaces and unpaved access areas. It is not a prediction that damage will occur; it is the reason to know whose conditions apply before taking the keys.

The collection-desk checklist

  • Check whose name must be on the booking, driving licence and payment card.
  • Verify the accepted card type and available credit for the deposit.
  • Read the fuel rule; “full to full” and prepaid fuel create different obligations.
  • Add any additional driver, child seat or young-driver charge before comparing totals.
  • Photograph the car in good light and ensure existing marks appear on the handover record.
  • Keep the fuel receipt and return record until the deposit has been released.

There is no honest universal deposit or young-driver age for Cagliari: each supplier sets its own terms. The booking page for your exact car is the source that matters.

A better way to compare

Shortlist cars that fit your passengers and luggage, then compare the payable total and conditions side by side. Reject an offer if the deposit exceeds your available credit or the card rule cannot be met, however attractive its daily rate looks. Choose additional protection only after reading both what the rental company already includes and how any separate protection makes a claim.

My recommendation: use the Cagliari comparison page, open the conditions for each finalist and choose the offer whose deposit, excess and card rule you can actually meet. That is a more useful saving than the lowest headline price.
