Underground Cagliari: Which Guided Tour of the Crypts and Hidden Sites?
Updated October 18, 2026 · 5 min read
The answer first. For most visitors the Underground Cagliari Walking Tour is the one to book: it starts at €30 per person, lasts 2 to 4 hours depending on the option you pick, and has 3,147 reviews on GetYourGuide, more than any other Cagliari tour. If you only want to see one crypt and are happy to read a panel, you can skip a guide entirely.
What is actually under the city
Cagliari was built on limestone, and the rock has been quarried, carved and reused for centuries. The best-known site is the Crypt of Santa Restituta in the Stampace district. According to the city’s tourism office it was probably a limestone quarry in the late Punic period, then a place of worship, then a store for amphorae, then forgotten for centuries and rediscovered in the sixteenth century. During the Second World War local people sheltered in it.
Inside you see two rock-cut staircases, a thirteenth-century painting of St John the Baptist and, on the altar, a marble statue of Santa Restituta. Entry on your own is €3 (€2 for students under 26 and over-65s, according to the city), with longer hours in the April–September season than in winter. Because it sits on an old quarry floor, expect steps rather than a flat floor.
The guided tours link several such places, so the question is less “crypt or no crypt” than “how much of the old town do you want with it”.
The three tours compared
| Tour | Price | Duration | Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|
| Underground Cagliari Walking Tour | €30 | 2–4 hours | 3,147 |
| Crypts and Mysteries from the Underground of Cagliari | €30 | 2.5 hours | 122 |
| Historic Districts and Underground Crypts – Small Groups | €45 | 2.5 hours | 5 |
Underground Cagliari Walking Tour – €30, 4.7 stars, 3,147 reviews, 2 to 4 hours. GetYourGuide describes three underground sites, and you choose whether to extend it with a guided walk through the Old Town or a food and wine tasting. The range of 2 to 4 hours comes from those options, so check which one you are selecting before you pay.
Crypts and Mysteries from the Underground of Cagliari – €30, 4.8 stars, 122 reviews, 2.5 hours. The listing names the Crypt of Santo Sepolcro, Santa Restituta and the archaeological site of Sant’Eulalia, with legends alongside the archaeology. It is the better pick if you want a fixed route with named stops and no add-ons.
Historic Districts and Underground Crypts – Small Groups – €45, 2.5 hours, led by local guides. It has only 5 reviews so far (all five stars), so there is little evidence either way. Choose it only if a smaller group matters to you more than €15.
Which one for whom
- First visit, one afternoon: the most-reviewed Underground Cagliari tour, ending in the Old Town if you tick that option.
- Already know the old town: the Crypts and Mysteries tour, which stays with the underground sites.
- Tight budget or short on time: pay the €3 at Santa Restituta and read the panels. You lose the guide’s stories and the other stops.
If you would rather stay above ground, the Cagliari walking tours page lists the 20 guided city walks, from €22.
Practical points
Steps and uneven rock are part of these sites; the tour descriptions do not promise step-free access, so ask the operator before booking if anyone in your group uses a wheelchair or has trouble with stairs. Opening hours and closures for individual crypts change, which is another reason a guided slot is simpler than building your own route. Pick a start time that leaves room for a break afterwards: the old town sits on a hill, and Cagliari in high summer is hot.
Not sure the underground is your priority? The flamingo tours of Molentargius are the other thing most visitors ask about.
