Flamingos in Cagliari: Molentargius Eco-Safari, Bike Tour or On Your Own?
Updated October 18, 2026 · 5 min read
The answer first. If you want the flamingos with a guide and no effort, the Molentargius Park Birding EcoSafari is the straightforward choice: €25 per person, 1.5 hours on an electric minibus, and 773 reviews. If you like to cycle, a bike tour covers more ground. If you have an hour and binoculars, the park is open to walk on your own.
What Molentargius is
The Molentargius-Saline park lies between Cagliari and Quartu Sant’Elena, right behind Poetto beach. According to the EcoSafari listing it covers roughly 1,600 hectares of ponds with different levels of salinity; it has been listed as a Ramsar wetland since 1977 and has been a regional park since 1999. Greater flamingos first settled here around 1993 and have been seen every year since, which is why the bird became the city’s symbol. They nest in spring (courtship starts around March) and are easily disturbed, which is why guided tours keep to set routes.
Sources disagree on when the birds are most numerous, so do not plan your trip around a month. Several guides say flamingos are present all year, with autumn and winter good for birdwatching generally. Early morning and the hour before sunset give the best light. Whether you see hundreds or a handful on a given day depends on the water and weather.
The tours compared
| Tour | Price | Duration | Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|
| EcoSafari with flamingos | €25 | 1.5 hours | 773 |
| Flamingo Oasis Bike Tour | €50 | 2 hours | 158 |

EcoSafari with flamingos – €25, 4.5 stars, 1.5 hours. An electric minibus with an environmental guide; the listing mentions more than 250 bird species in protected areas. It is the cheapest and the shortest, and the only one where you steer nothing yourself. Its rating is the lowest in this group, so read recent reviews for what people liked and did not.
Flamingo Oasis Bike Tour – €50, 4.6 stars, 158 reviews, 2 hours, along the sea and river.
Molentargius Canals E-Bike Tour – €60, 4.8 stars, 78 reviews, 4 hours. It follows the park and then the Poetto seafront as far as the Calamosca lighthouse, so it is half flamingos, half coast.
Old Town and Flamingos E-Bike Combo – €49, 4.7 stars, 119 reviews, 2.5 hours. The listing says it covers the whole area of Cagliari including the flamingo park, so flamingos are one part of it.
Segway Tour with Coffee – €65, 4.7 stars, 130 reviews, 2 hours, with a guide who explains the park’s history.
Who should not book
The booking pages list exclusions. According to its page, the EcoSafari is not suitable for people with mobility impairments or over 150 kg; baby strollers and electric wheelchairs are not allowed. The Flamingo Oasis Bike Tour excludes children under 13 and people under 155 cm, the canals e-bike tour excludes people under 140 cm and over 100 kg, and the Segway tour excludes children under 10, pregnant women and people with mobility impairments. The Old Town e-bike combo excludes children under 14 and requires an average level of cycling ability.
On your own
The park is free to enter and open from dawn to dusk according to one guide; bicycles can be rented near the Viale Poetto entrance. City buses run to stops near the park and Poetto, but check current lines on the local operator’s site. Bring binoculars and a long lens: from a path you will usually see flamingos at a distance, not close up. What a tour adds is a route and someone who explains what you are looking at.
Another place to see them
The Conti Vecchi saltworks, a working salt plant west of the city, also have flamingos and a train ride; our saltworks guide explains the visit. For all flamingo and park offers see flamingo tours in Cagliari, which has 14 listings from €12.
Which to choose
Choose the EcoSafari for the lowest price and the least effort. Choose the e-bike if you want the coast as well. Choose neither if you only need a free hour: walk the park at sunset.
